Is there such a thing as a “code” that has the power to unlock the laws that govern the universe of Voice Over?
If you have spent enough time around me you know that I love numbers and, most notably, numbers love me! Numbers, shapes and patterns… They literally talk to me and tell me the most fascinating stories about a world of order and chaos.
When Amazon Prime started showing “The Code”, a brilliant BBC Two documentary, I was beyond delighted. Marcus du Sautoy brings life into Math of all things; and takes us on a journey filled with cicadas, Pixar Genius and Jellybeans.
All that made me wonder… Is there a secret formula for our VO Careers? What is the secret code that unlocks our storytelling superpowers? Can we make predictions based on a talent’s genre expertise, location, background or gender? What is the key to success in Voice Over?
We may never know the answers to all of these questions; but one thing is undeniable: the code of hard work and ethics. Showing up prepared. Doing our best. Having a business mindset. Reminding ourselves that our ultimate goal is to be of service, to fulfill a need and bring ease into our client’s day.
What is your VO Code? Did you follow a recipe to get where you are in your career?
I would love to hear about your journey… Let’s connect on Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter.
Take Note
February is a great month to catch up with those who make our career lives so much more, well, lively!
How about sending a handwritten note to reconnect with clients you haven’t heard from in a while or a ‘Thank You’ card to show appreciation to an agent, producer, coach, peer?
If you are looking for one-of-a-kind cards to impress, checkout www.punkpost.com and browse through hundreds of handmade designs to deliver your message in style.
If you are working on a budget, try www.vistaprint.com. I designed my own “thank you so much” card with them in minutes. I was quite impressed by how easy and fast the whole process was.
Purposefully Random
“The truth is our lives aren’t random; they’re chaotic. A tangled web of cause and effect in which insignificant moments escalate into events that change our lives forever…” – Marcus du Sautoy (The Code).
